Drink at least 8 glasses of iced water a day; before you put one single piece of food in your mouth (remember the calories in that mouthful!) - get into the habit of forcing yourself to have a glass of water first! This will give you time to reconsider whether or not you need those calories, it will also act as an appetite suppressant and will partially fill that empty stomach!

Avoid cooking with lard or oils of any kind as they are high in calories and saturated fats; an excess of saturated fats is associated with colon cancer and other diseases. Try using unsaturated Extra Virgin Olive Oil - unsaturated fats are associated with longevity and a lower risk of disease and olive oil is a good example of an unsaturated fat. Evidence suggests that two tablespoons of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat it contains.

Moderation - simply reduce your portion sizes and eat more fresh foods than processed foods. Substitute - add lots more green leafy vegetables and reduce the potatoes, eat a bowl of raw vegetable before you even commence your main meal, trim off all fat from meats and the skin from the chicken; there are lots of tricks you can use - another is to hard-boil some eggs, give the yolk to someone in the family who does not need to lose weight and you have the white, dressed up for flavour with a teaspoon of sweet chilli sauce or tomato ketchup or some mustard. There are so many low calorie ways to give your body the bulk it demands but at the same time cut back on those foods that cause obesity. Chicken is an excellent source of protein and very low in carbohydrates, so substitute chicken for red meat as often as you can.

Soy-based products are also excellent substitutes for protein consumption: meat-less hamburgers, falafel, soy-based bacon, soy-based sausages and so on. Remember to add (sparingly) all your favorite sauces to these (barbeque, tomato, chilli etc) to ensure the taste is good!

Low fat dairy products are essential and you will still get all the nutrients without the fat. Yogurt is great for those dieting, but make sure it contains live cultures as these bacteria boost the immune system restoring good bacteria to our digestive system to combat the bad and these hep the body to digest food and prevent stomach infections. In addition yoghurt is an excellent source of protein, calcium and vitamin B12.

Snacks - go shopping and instead of buying the sweets and the carbonated drinks, all heavy with calories and sugars and salts, go to the nuts and get a selection of these, then some dried fruits and some fresh fruit, some suitable raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes along with some fresh herbs such as basil and dill. Return home and prepare them all and have on hand a wide selection of your own special "snack foods" and snack to your heart's content knowing that you are not consuming all those calories like before. And please do give the "water before any food" tip some serious consideration as it really will help you get through those times when the body is screaming for sugar and carbs! Guaranteed! 

The final point to note is that you can eat almost everything you want just as long as you eat in moderation, consuming less calories than your body actually burns. Dieting should not be and does not have to be a burden associated with deprivation. It is up to you to make the decision to learn to eat healthy foods and reject the junk foods that destroy your confidence and beauty. Good luck!
